You know you’re in for a grand afternoon where class will rub shoulders with elegance, as glamour makes its presence felt right from the time you receive the invite to the soirée. Accompanied by a bouquet of seven dozen white Thai roses strung together with crystals, is the foot-and-a-half long ivory card that invites you to the sit-down lunch hosted this afternoon by Chhaya Momaya as she presents joiliere Varuna D Jani for Popley Eternal.
“I wanted the whole preview of Varuna D Jani’s new jewellery line of fine diamonds and precious stones set in gold that she has done for Popley Eternal to be a decadent afternoon filled with oodles of style,” says Chhaya, who has pulled out no stops to make the lunch a memorable one. Right from a ballet performance to a hands-on fashion show, the do will have it all and then some more...
“My jewellery has to be enjoyed at leisure as it demands that kind of attention,” says Varuna, who has chosen not to have professional models show off her creations. “Instead, we will have small ballerinas who will come to each table showing guests the neckpieces so that they can have a more hands on feel of the jewellery. We have used little children as the models because children are pure and so are diamonds.” Recognising the upward sure in the demand for luxury goods in India today, Varuna has divided her collection of high-end jewellery into four phases of a woman’s life.
“The line that is available exclusively at Popley Eternal, has four collections that range from a woman’s courtship phase that I have called ‘Crush’ to the wedding phase which is called ‘Bliss’ to the phase of being a mother called ‘Fortune’ to the final phase where the woman celebrates her children called ‘Harmony’,” explains 40-year-old Varuna, who although being a mother of three grown-up daughters looks half her age. So what’s the secret? “My creativity and sheer enthusiasm for my work I guess!” she laughs. “I want my pieces to be enjoyed and treasured and worn by the wearer as much as she can, rather than leaving them locked up in the safety vault all the time. My wish is that they turn into heirlooms that can be passed down generation after generation. That is after all the USP of diamonds — they are forever... or should we say eternal?”
